At their April 9, 2024, meeting, County Council authorized staff to utilize the approx. $1.8M remaining in the Maybank Corridor Improvements project budget to move forward with design work for the widening of Maybank Highway from River Road to the Stono River Bridge. This project will construct an additional outbound lane on Maybank Highway off of Johns Island and onto James Island. At completion, this section of Maybank Highway will provide a 4-lane roadway (2 travel lanes in each direction) with 11-foot travel lanes, along with dedicated turn lanes at Fenwick Hall Allee and a left turn lane into the Indigo Grove subdivision.
The scope and fee for design has been approved and design work is underway. 30% plans were submitted to SCDOT in late-September for review and comments.
